Seaford hit four on their way to three points in siege of Arundel

Seaford Town produced an assertive display in West Sussex this afternoon on their way to a 4-0 conquest over Arundel at Mill Road. Two first half strikes from Callum Connor, along with goals for Alex Saunders and Reece Edwards saw Seaford on their way to a comprehensive victory, which sees another valuable three points head back along the coast with only 4 league games remaining.

Seaford’s versatility in attack looked to create problems for Arundel from the off, and having already identified space in behind to exploit the home side, it only took 5 minutes for the visitors to take the lead through top-scorer Callum Connor. Being on the receiving end of a clipped ball over the top of the Arundel backline, Connor was able to bring the ball under control before finishing across the ‘keeper from 15 yards to make it 1-0.

Despite the hosts managing to get more of a foot on the ball following the early concession, Seaford stood assertively to nullify any potential Arundel threat. The forced replacement of George Olulode in the 24th minute proved a slight blow for Seaford after the midfielder picked up a knock from a 50/50 challenge, yet the visitors’ control over the game did not waver as the half progressed.

Seaford gradually looked to develop on their lead, with efforts from Connor and Callum Edwards showing signs of the away side’s growing dominance ahead of the half hour mark. With 33 minutes on the clock Seaford grabbed a second, yet again via the handy-work of Connor. After a deep set-piece floated into the box was left not dealt with by the Arundel defence, the striker was on hand to pick up the scraps, firing low on the swivel into the bottom right corner to mark his 30th of the campaign.

Arundel went close to halving the deficit five minutes before the interval, with striker Oliver Hawkins heading narrowly wide from close range following a dangerous delivery from the right flank. While Seaford's lead was warranted based on the quality of chances created during the first half, Arundel refused to show signs of rolling over.

The hosts continued to press forward whenever they had the chance, and looked as if they had fashioned an opening for an equaliser just after the restart when Ryan Chittock was played through on goal in the 53rd minute. However, as had been an issue for both sides throughout the game, the soft condition of the pitch provided a hindrance when it came to carrying the ball forward, with Chittock learning the way as his heavy touch allowed Seaford 'keeper Mike Platt the opportunity to come out and deal with the danger.

In spite of Seaford going on to make a handful of precautionary changes ahead of Tuesday night's R.U.R Cup Quarter-Final, Arundel's difficulties coping with the visitors' remaining attacking threat continued. Midfielder Alex Saunders got his name on the scoresheet in the 72nd minute, stabbing home on the rebound after substitute Matt Holland saw his driven strike tipped away by Paali Susso in the Arundel net. Finally with only minutes to play, it was winger Reece Edwards who managed to round off the scoring for Paul Wise’s side, beating the offside trap before slotting the ball underneath the ‘keeper to make it 4-0, putting an exclamation mark on what had been a professional display from playoff-chasing Seaford.
