More pre-season minutes as Eastbourne Town run out winners at the Crouch

Seaford Town continued their return to fitness with a tough encounter against a young Eastbourne Town side, with three second half goals seeing Jude MacDonald's visitors emerge 3-0 winners at the Crouch.

Off the back of Saturday’s defeat to Newhaven in the Steve Charman Trophy, Paul Wise’s side looked to build on that performance with another test against higher league opposition, this time against an Eastbourne Town team who look to build on a 6th place finish in last season’s Premier Division campaign. The Saffrons outfit came closest early on to opening the scoring, with Seaford’s Simon Piper blocking inside the 6-yard box after Leke Ademola was sent through in behind the hosts’ backline, squaring the ball to Ane Sisimayi who saw his effort denied.

Seaford’s best offensive moment in the first half arrived with just one minute to play before the whistle, with right-sided midfielder Ben Earle forcing a good save from the Town ‘keeper following a driven effort from 25 yards. In spite of a lack of clear cut chances for the hosts, the first 45 minutes showed promise for Paul Wise’s side, having been able to formulate a number of encouraging passages of play.

Seaford opened up the second half in similar bright fashion, with Piper pulling an effort just wide of the far post after beating his man inside the area. Soon it would be Eastbourne Town’s turn to amp up the pressure, and after managing to carve out a more consistent array of attacking phases, the visitors would eventually go on to take the lead in the 57th minute. After an unsuccessful offside trap left Seaford in a three-on-one situation at the back, it was winger Fletcher Holman who was ultimately able to finish off from twelve yards.

Ten minutes later, Eastbourne would go on to grab a second, this time after a long ball from Seaford ‘keeper Mike Platt was intercepted in the middle of the park and subsequently lobbed into the net on the half-volley from 40-yards. The visitors were not done there, and only a minute later they would go on to extend their lead to three courtesy of Sisimayi, who stabbed home on the rebound after an initial effort from the edge of the box was tipped on to the post.

A disappointing collapse from a Seaford standpoint coming out of the half time break, and despite showing signs of promise throughout the game, the home side were unable to pose enough questions in the attacking third to warrant coming away with a result. Valuable pre-season minutes nonetheless, as Town look forward to a trip to the Isle of Wight as they face Cowes Sports FC this coming Saturday.
