Seaford produce dominant showing to overcome Shoreham

Seaford Town recorded their first points of the season in resounding fashion after they defeated Shoreham 5-0 at Middle Road. Despite heading into the game joint top of the division, the home side were unable to follow on from their opening day victory, instead finding themselves on the receiving end of a dominant display from the visitors.

The first 20 minutes seemed to set the tone for the rest of the match, with Seaford enjoying the large majority of meaningful possession throughout the opening period. They would have found an opener after 25 minutes had it not been for an excellent save from Shoreham 'keeper Ricardo Mendonca, who was able to deny Reece Edwards after a promising passage of play from Seaford. The away side did not have to wait long to break the deadlock, however, after a clever feed from Billy Pout found the path of Edwards, who this time made no mistake in slotting past the 'keeper to make it 1-0. And so the floodgates opened, as within a matter of minutes the visitors doubled their lead. An effective piece of link-up play between Edwards and Scott Taylor at the edge of the 18-yard box, with the latter eventually spotting the late run of midfielder Matt Ford who swept home at the far post.
Shoreham's first half performance showed very few signs of rejuvenation following the early concessions, with their deficit rising to three after Seaford's Scott Taylor was released one-on-one with the 'keeper, who could not get enough on the ball to prevent it looping into the back of the net. A deserved goal for Taylor, who had been the bright spark needed for a Seaford side whose lack of clinical finishing had been manager Paul Wise's main desired improvement for his side ahead of the game. Shoreham did come close to pulling a goal back before, with forward Scott Tamplin unlucky to see his low effort roll past the post just minutes before half time.

The home side began the second half looking substantially more capable of finding a way back into the game, with Seaford 'keeper Mike Platt called upon on several occasions to deny a series of efforts from the Musselmen. Shoreham's decision to commit more players forward however would soon backfire, with Seaford making it 4-0 after a misjudged bounce from Shoreham's Jack Nichols allowed Reece Edwards the chance to double his tally, which he took confidently to all but see off any hope of a comeback. Shoreham's capitulation was sealed with just under 25 minutes to play, once again after a counter attack eventually found substitute Simon Piper, whose assured finish into the bottom corner closed the scoring for the delighted Seaford contingent. 5-0 the final score, with Seaford rising to 5th in the table following a comprehensive victory in the end.
